Fridge magnet

About 2 to 4 inches · palm-width clear at the handle

Red enamel fridge plaque with a navy rim stuck to a cream refrigerator door
An enamel plaque on painted steel. Center or upper third. Handle strip left clear.

A fridge magnet is the object that lives on kitchen steel. In Orlando that steel is a hotel kitchenette, a Lake Nona apartment, a downtown tower, or a painted door west of I-4. Typical size is about 2 to 4 inches. A 2-inch disc still reads the city. A 4-inch round wants a wide door and a palm-width at the handle.

What the door will hold

Painted finishes hold a thin magnet. GE Appliances: bisque, black, and white paint over metal. Austenitic stainless, including Type 304, usually will not — Scientific American is the public split. Test with a spoon. Try the door, then a side wall. GE advises against magnets on black stainless or fingerprint-resistant stainless; the finish can mark even when the steel underneath would hold.

Keep magnets off the gasket. Do not stack magnets on magnets unless you mean to. Leave one rectangle of empty steel for a note. Humidity on a Florida kitchen door is high in the morning; the Florida Climate Center puts Orlando’s average morning relative humidity at 88 percent for the year. Enamel still looks like metal after that air. A tin print is lighter and scuffs in a zipper.
